Vernon Davis gives 49ers “The Catch III” to defeat Saints (VIDEO)

(Image via Sportsgrid.com)

We’re obviously a little late to the party on this, but the San Francisco 49ers took down the New Orleans Saints 36-32 in the game of the Divisional Playoff weekend, with Alex Smith delivering the game-winning TD to Vernon Davis on what will undoubtedly forever go down in San Francisco sports history as “The Catch III”.

Both Smith and Davis turned in career-making performances and Smith finally delivered on his #1 pick expectations by out-dueling the NFL’s all-time single season passing leader (Drew Brees) in a game that saw four lead changes in the final 5 minutes! Smith had his NFL bar mitzvah and became a man on Saturday, finishing with 299 yards and 3 TDs passing, 0 INTs and one 28-yard rushing score to pus SF ahead late in the 4th.

For his part, Vernon Davis cemented himself in Niner lore with 7 catches for 180 yards and 2 TDs, including the game winner on a 14-yard strike from Smith with nine seconds remaining. After dominating all day long and when his team needed him most, Davis delivered a huge blow to Saints safety Roman Harper in the endzone and managed to hang onto the ball for the win.

On what was very nearly the 30th anniversary of the original “The Catch” – Dwight Clark‘s infamous touchdown grab in the 1981 NFC Championship game (1/10/82) – Davis’ play more closely resembled “The Catch II” by Terrell Owens in 1999, right down to crying on the shoulder of head coach Jim Harbaugh as he ran to the sideline (pic above).

T.O. calls Revis, ‘Just an average corner to me’

Revis is average only when compared with the citizenry of Revis Island. (Source: AP)

The Associated Press reports Tuesday that Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, in anticipation of Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets, labeled All-Pro Darrelle Revis “Just an average corner to me.”

Owens followed it up with this:

“No disrespect. He’s only done one thing for one year. You talk about shutdown corners, you need to repeatedly do it year-in and year-out. I think he did it one year and everybody made a lot of hoopla about it. I think he started feeling himself, then he wanted to come out and say that I am a slouch.”

Revis called Owens a slouch last season, citing his lack of hustle in their matchups. So, to be fair, the Bengals receiver was simply responding.

Owens had no comment about how his inflammatory remarks — coupled with labeling the Bengals as a “terrible” team — would help motivate the Jets and/or demotivate the Bengals, respectively.

Owens, it should be noted, is tied for third in the NFL with 62 catches — a receiver nobody wanted midway through the summer.

4:30 Tuesday Afternoon Phone Call: Trent Edwards and Terrell Owens

Do they have Buffalo Wings in Jacksonville?

Trent Edwards: Hey, TO it’s me Trent – got a moment?

Terrell Owens: Losman! What is happening! Send me some wings? Where are my Buffalo wings? FedEx them… do it now!

TE: TO – the Bills let me go…I’m packing up right now. I can’t send you shit. Listen, I got a favor to ask.

TO: Why are they called Buffalo wings anyway? Like have you ever seen a Buffalo in Buffalo? They should call them something else… like Fat People Really Love These Yummy Things Wings- that makes some sense right there. I tell you Trent life sure can be funny!

TE: Right… this was a mistake, looks like my agent is on the other line – maybe the Jets will pick me up.

TO: The Jets! There is another one… what is that… they should be called the New Jersey Hobos.

TE: The Hobos…?

TO: The Bindle Sticks!

TE: What?

TO: The Wayne County Hoovervilles!

TE: Holy God did you watch PBS last night?

TO: Hell yeah buddy – my cat, Stevie Nicks and me!

TE: This conversation isn’t really working out

TO: Hang on I’m cinching up my pants! Oh nice and cinchy!

TE: Listen, TO, can you just please put in a good word for me with Marvin?

TO: Marvin…

TE: Marvin Lewis… your head coach.

TO: Wait… really?

TE: Well can you just let him know I’m available?

TO: Tell that to Stevie Nicks!

TE: Oh no… I really don’t want to talk to your cat.

TO: Meow?

TE: TO, It’s been a long week; I know that’s you.

TO: Meow… it’s me the greatest cat ever! Stevie Nicks.

TE: I really need to go.

TO: How can Stevie Nicks help you Yale man?

TE: It’s Stanford… I went to Stanford.

TO: My friend Socks went there too, meow!

TE: Bye Terrell – my agent is texting about the Jags…

TO: Meow!!

TE: (hangs up)

Terrell Owens beginning to melt in Buffalo

With Terrell Owens, it’s not really a question of if he’s going to start tearing apart the Buffalo Bills locker room.  It’s just a question of when.

So after hauling in ZERO catches for ZERO yards in yesterday’s 27-7 loss to the Saints, all eyes were on T.O. during his post-game press conference.  Was this the day he was going to throw his first tantrum in front of the Buffalo cameras?  The reporters were blatantly egging him on, just praying he would throw Trent Edwards or Dick Jauron under the bus. But Owens was having none of it:

To his credit, Owens played it relatively cool, and stuck to the “I’m just going with the plays that are called” script.

But you can tell he’s just seething behind those designer sunglasses.  After a 1-2 start and with less than 100 yards receiving, the Bills had better pray they can turn things around quickly, and get their star FA acquisition some more touches.  If not, it’s only a matter of time before Owens loses his cool.  Whether in the locker room, on the field, or in front of the press … it’s going to happen.  And Trent Edwards had better have his big boy pants on.

Ex-Cowboys piling on the Anti-Romo train

TO rips Romo_Twitter

Oh Snap!

In the wake of his 3-interception performance in Sunday’ loss to the New York Giants, QB Tony Romo has become the whipping boy of fans, media and ex-Cowboys alike. The backlash against Romo and his backward-hat wearing-fratboy-failure-in-the-big-game routine has been swift and justifiably harsh.

First, Terrell Owens Twitter-slapped Romo on Monday with the post in the above banner pic.  Juvenile, self-serving and expected.  Yawn.  But then, legendary Cowboys RB and Miller Lite silent pitchman Tony Dorsett went on Fox Radio and had this to say about the hope of the Dallas franchise:

tony-dorsett“Well, for one thing, I don’t know why on God’s earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League.  Tony is very young in his career.  Not to say you can’t be young in your career and be a superstar because you’ve got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson. But the thing is this: you have a guy who hasn’t done much and quarterbacks in the National Football League, most of them go through this growing curve. He hasn’t gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden.  Now he’s having to live up to that.

But, he’s a good player who’s still learning how to play in the National Football League and I think the media has given him too much credit for doing nothing. He hasn’t done anything really in the National Football League to deserve all the recognition and visibility that he’s gotten so far.  And now he’s going to have to live with how they treat the quarterback in the National Football League whether you’re a young quarterback or you’re a superstar or you’re not.”

Ouch.  But Dorsett is completely right. And his criticism actually means something, because he’s a Hall of Famer, and not a me-first pinhead like T.O. Dallas fans had better hope Romo takes some of this to heart and starts focusing on winning games instead of believing his own hype.  As is stands now, he’s got a long way to go before he’ll be remembered for anything more than fumbling a FG snap and dating Jessica Simpson.

Now I suddenly have an urge to watch Tony Dorsett highlights.  And maybe drink a cold Miller Lite.
