Take a peek at Madden NFL 12
I don’t own a PlayStation, XBox or a Nintendo, and it’s been years since I lounged around the house playing video games.
Still: It interests me. I dig seeing the advances in Madden each year.
Artie Fufkin, C-O-U-R-T-N-E-Y, steverodgers and I logged well over 20,000 hours playing Tecmo Bowl back in the day (early 1990s, before some of you were born), and we couldn’t have dreamed of a game like this back then. From where I sit, Madden NFL 12 is a stunning dream.
Take a look at how far we’ve come (and by “we’ve,” I mean EA Sports):

Now this is Fantasy Football (VIDEO)
Fantasy Football has literally taken over America, with millions of wanna-be GMs poring over their make believe rosters week-in and week-out, in an effort to prove superior football knowledge over their peers. It’s changed the way most of us watch the game, and we at R&R are certainly no different, spending far too much team each week managing our fake line-ups. And we’re not too proud to admit it.
Well for the folks over at G4 – who certainly know a thing or too about being a geek – the word “fantasy” conjures up some different images (i.e., World of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons and the like). So the nerds over there took the time to imagine what it would look like if their definition of “fantasy” collided with our world of pro football … and present it to us in a Tecmo Bowl-style video game. Need I say more?
Enjoy, Via G4:
VIDEO: Preview the new ‘Tecmo Bowl: Throwback’ game
So, this video is the “Exclusive Debut Trailer” for the new Tecmo Bowl: Throwback game, set to be released this spring on XBox and Playstation. From Gametrailers.com:
Call me a grumpy old man, but this just feels like yet another bastardization of my childhood memories in an effort to make a quick buck. Like every idea in Hollywood these days (see Where The Wild Things Are, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, etc.), this just reeks of a desperate attempt to forgo actual imagination and originality by slapping together a remake of something that worked 20+ years ago.
I mean, don’t get me wrong … we LOVE Tecmo Bowl here at RnR. It’s how we cut our video game teeth. But the novelty of that old style of game play will likely wear off in about 12 minutes, and it doesn’t look like the 3-D version is going to be winning over any folks who are accustomed to the Madden series of games. Especially since Madden (unlike Tecmo) is actually licensed by the NFL, so you can use real players, instead of generic guys like Brooke, Simmons and Thacker.
Hopefully they can at least license the names of retired guys like Bo Jackson and Lawrence Taylor, so we can re-live their Tecmo days of glory.
Tracy Porter’s Super Bowl Interception, Tecmo Bowl-style
Now that the dust has settled from Super Bowl 44, we would be remiss if we didn’t post one last Tecmo Bowl recreation for the season, from our Youtube friend MRNFL. This one captures the biggest play from Super Sunday, and possibly the entire season, as Tecmo Tracy Porter picks off Tecmo Peyton and races 74 yards for the game-winning score.
I’m not sure if I’ll ever get tired of these.
Favre’s game-winning TD to Greg Lewis, Tecmo Bowl style
Now here’s a growing trend that we can all get behind! Geeks across the land – most notably YouTube user MrNFL – have taken to re-creating their favorite NFL plays in the classic NES football game, Tecmo Bowl. (see our earlier post of the Broncos’ miracle victory)
This one of Brett Favre’s last-second GW TD pass against the 49ers from 2 weekends ago is pretty good:
I love the way he edits it with announcers, replays and scoreboard shots.
Well done, sir.
Tecmo Bowl fan? You can play right now…
Did you spend hundreds of hours playing Tecmo Bowl?
Well, we found a site that allows you to play it on your laptop… today… right now.
I’ve just blocked out the next 400-500 hours…

How do we feel about this?

Nike Introduces “Tecmo Bo” Sneakers

In news that made our inner child jump out of it’s seat, Nike is set to release a new series of sneakers in tribute to Bo Jackson. And what better way to immortalize the greatest 2-sport athlete of our day than by capturing him at the apex of his career … namely, as the unstoppable force that Jackson was in the old-school video game, Tecmo Bowl. Behold the former Raider in all his 8-bit glory!
From First Cuts:
To start the Bo Jackson series, Nike is set to release two sneakers inspired by Bo’s appearances in classic video games. Dubbed the “Tecmo Bo” pack, the pack features two colorways of the Nike Air Trainer TW II, a Black and a Grey (the Grey is not pictured), that are both inspired by Bo’s days on the gridiron as an L.A. Raider. The tongue on the sneaker features an 8-bit version of Bo from the classic Tecmo Bowl NES video game.
The shoes are set to hit stores in August, but are available at select retailers now. We make no apologies for our love of old-school video games here at ReadandReact, and this item has shot right to the top of our Xmas list. Glad to see the design wizards up in Beaverton are letting their geek flag fly.
Bo Jackson – Tecmo Bowl Legend
And now, a trip down memory lane. Who among us didn’t spend countless hours playing Tecmo Bowl on the original NES in our footy pajamas, and eventually figured out that there were certain plays & players who were completely unstoppable?
Here’s a tribute to the greatest Tecmo Bowl player ever – Bo Jackson. In this graceful & effortless off-tackle run, he eats up 99 yards (a few times) and an entire quarter of play. Enjoy:
