Darrelle Revis mic’d up vs the Cowboys is awesome (VIDEO)

(Photo: Newsday.com)

The NFL Films crew is back for another season putting microphones on the best players in the game and bringing fans the sights & sounds of the game like no one else.  In addition to their unrivaled Sound FX program on NFL Network, this footage is also airing as part of a brand new series, NFL Turning Point on Versus, which apparently is a network now.

On Sunday night, Jets CB Darrelle Revis was wired for sound as he battled Cowboys WR Dez Bryant, and ultimately delivered the crucial last-minute interception that set up Nick Folk’s game-winning 50-yard field goal. It was the first time Revis had ever worn a microphone during a game, and the all-everything corner said that he forgot he was wearing it until after the fact. Revis suggested that some of the audio they captured would need to be edited for public consumption before airing:

“Yeah, (it was) pretty cool. I’ll tell you, though, there was some crazy stuff on that mic, man,” Revis said. “It’s the heat of the battle. He said words to me, and I’m saying words back to Dez.”

“It’s X-rated. There was a lot of stuff going on, a lot of back and forth … That’s real life. Whatever was said on there, that’s what it was. It’s in the heat of the moment, the heat of battle. That’s what it was.”

Even with the X-rated stuff on the cutting room floor, it’s definitely fun to watch Revis and Bryant go at it throughout the game, with Revis expressing his respect for the young receiver both during and afterward. But it was Revis who once again proved himself to be the best shutdown corner in all of football, delivering the big play when his team needed it the most.

Tony Romo Fumbles Away Game vs Jets (VIDEO)

(Photo: Louis DeLuca/Dallas Morning News)

The Tony Romo we’ve come to know and love finally showed up in the 4th quarter of tonight’s Jets-Cowboys tilt at the newly-christened MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

After an impressive three quarters of football, Romo and the Cowboys led New York 24-17 with 9:12 remaining in the game, and 3rd & goal from the 2-yard line. With a chance to seal the win with a touchdown (or at least a field goal), Romo took the snap from shotgun, looked right, then left, then straight downfield before tucking the ball and deciding to run for it.  See if you can guess what happens next:

The Jets later tied the game on a blocked punt & return for a score, and Romo – who finished 23-of-36 for 342 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT – had a chance at a game-winning drive with under a minute to play.  But Romo’s first pass attempt was an awful one, getting picked off by Darrelle Revis, which set up Jets kicker Nick Folk to be the hero, drilling a 50-yard field goal with :27 to go.

T.O. calls Revis, ‘Just an average corner to me’

Revis is average only when compared with the citizenry of Revis Island. (Source: AP)

The Associated Press reports Tuesday that Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, in anticipation of Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets, labeled All-Pro Darrelle Revis “Just an average corner to me.”

Owens followed it up with this:

“No disrespect. He’s only done one thing for one year. You talk about shutdown corners, you need to repeatedly do it year-in and year-out. I think he did it one year and everybody made a lot of hoopla about it. I think he started feeling himself, then he wanted to come out and say that I am a slouch.”

Revis called Owens a slouch last season, citing his lack of hustle in their matchups. So, to be fair, the Bengals receiver was simply responding.

Owens had no comment about how his inflammatory remarks — coupled with labeling the Bengals as a “terrible” team — would help motivate the Jets and/or demotivate the Bengals, respectively.

Owens, it should be noted, is tied for third in the NFL with 62 catches — a receiver nobody wanted midway through the summer.

VIDEO: Randy Moss no slouch against Darrelle Revis

(Photo: Robert Deutsch, USA TODAY)

The build-up to this afternoon’s Jets/Patriots game was filled with all sorts of smack talk between the AFC East rivals, leading some in the media to label the match-up as the “Hate Bowl”.  One of the juicier pieces of trash talk was leveled at WR Randy Moss by Jets CB Darrelle Revis, when Revis labeled Moss a “slouch” during an interview with NFL Network in January. After all, Revis had effectively shut down Moss last season, holding him to nine catches for 58 yards and just one touchdown in two games last season.

Earlier this week, Moss responded:

“I guess he’s entitled to say what he wants to say,’’ Moss said. “Then again, we’re coming to the Meadowlands on Sunday, man, so you got 60 minutes of this ‘slouch.’ I don’t really get into the trash talking, but if what he called me was a slouch, then I guess the slouch will be there to see you on Sunday.’’

And late in the 2nd quarter of today’s game, the “slouch” showed up big time, snaring this Tom Brady pass with a beautiful one-handed grab for a 34-yard TD over Revis:

Jets agree to new deal with CB Darrelle Revis; return to Revis Island

That massive sigh of relief you heard from the east coast this morning was the collective of Jets nation reading the news that their superstar, CB Darrelle Revis has ended his holdout and agreed to terms on a new contract with the New York Jets. The deal is reportedly worth $46-million over four years, including $32 million guaranteed.

Revis broke the news oh his Twitter account early Monday, saying, “I’m comin home baby!!! Revis Island LET’S GO.” He followed that up a bit later, writing, “It not has only been hard on u guys, but it has for me too,” “I just want to tell yall that I’m sorry for this process and I can’t wait to get back on the field.”

Revis – who is widely regarded as the best shutdown corner in the NFL – was scheduled to make only $1 million this year, but was looking for a contract on par with the Raiders Nnamdi Asomugha, currently the highest paid CB in the league. The high-profile holdout and negotiations with Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum were seen up close on HBO’s Hard Knocks, and had seemingly reached a stalemate after countless meetings at the now-famed Roscoe Diner without making any progress.

But the turning point apparently came over the weekend when Jets owner Woody Johnson and head coach Rex Ryan flew to South Florida to meet with Revis and his family.  They made a “significant breakthrough” at around 11pm Sunday night, and were able to quickly reach a deal thereafter, much to the relief of Tannenbaum:

“I think this is a great deal for Darrelle and I think it’s responsible for the club. From that standpoint, I think it’s a win-win,” Tannenbaum said. “I’m happy. I’m relieved. Obviously, Darrelle’s a great player. He’s our guy. He’s an important piece to what we’re trying to accomplish here.

HBO Hard Knocks: New York Jets, Episode 1

(Photo: Photo: Al Pereira/Getty Images via NYMag.com

Last night, HBO premiered the first episode of this season’s edition of Hard Knocks featuring Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.  I took the time to jot down my thoughts during the episode, which I’ve distilled below.

Essentially, this episode was about two things: Rex and Revis.   Rex Ryan took center stage as expected and did not disappoint (especially in the cursing department), and Darrelle Revis was the central focus of the episode, despite (or more correctly, because of) his absence from camp.

The fine folks at JetTwit did a much better job breaking down last night’s episode than I ever could, but here are my running thoughts, in case anyone cares:

  • If this show were about my favorite team, this intro would get me seriously physically aroused.  I think I’m ready for football to start
  • Cortland, NY is an awful town … as an alumnus of their rival Ithaca Bombers, I had the displeasure of visiting this beacon of crapitude several times during my college career, and this is not a place you want to spend your summers.  But HBO managed to make it look better in 2 minutes of b-roll footage than it ever did during my time there.  But I may be biased.
  • It’s obvious that the Revis holdout will be big storyline. It must be maddening to have everyone asking about one player when you’re trying to lead a group of 60+ other guys who are all there to do their job
  • Rex Ryan doesn’t look to have started shedding much weight yet from the lap band surgery.
  • Here’s video of Rex’s opening speech to his players. His goals for the team – all 3 units – is to lead the league in wins. Radical strategy, there.  But he’s definitely someone you’d want to play for. Rex is so oddly charismatic, but boy, he sure does say “fuck” a lot (and I mean a LOT – video NSFW for language):

  • Rex wears black Chuck Taylors on the first day of camp … apparently this is his thing.  And it elicits the “sexy Rexy” chant from a few male Jets fans, and he likes it. Read the rest of this entry »

Nate Kaeding forgets how to kick, Jets stun Chargers (video)

(AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi via ESPN.com)

Nate Kaeding misses his third FG attempt of the day. The Chargers lost by 3. You do the math. (AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi via ESPN.com)

The New York Jets shocked the heavily favored San Diego Chargers 17-14 to advance in the AFC Playoffs today.  The Jets scored two 4th quarter touchdowns to pull away down the stretch, but the big story of the game was Chargers Pro Bowl K Nate Kaeding, who missed 3 Field Goal attempts that would have won the game for San Diego.  Normally one of the most reliable kickers in the league, Kaeding was clearly paid off by NY mobsters to throw the game.

The Chargers seemed to be in control of this defensive struggle for most of the game, but that changed late in the 3rd quarter, when Jets’ super-CB Darrelle Revis made this incredible interception of a Philip Rivers pass intended for Vincent Jackson (Nantz and Simms had no idea what was going on):

Rex Ryan Really Rikes Revis as Defensive POY (video)

(sorry, but sometimes headline alliteration supersedes proper English)

(Image via NYJetsFan.com)

(Image via NYJetsFan.com)

Yesterday, Packers DB Charles Woodson was named as the AP’s Defensive Player of the Year for 2009.  And while Woodson had an excellent year with 9 INTs, the runner-up for the award was NY Jets CB Darrell Revis, who arguably had the most memorable season for a shutdown corner in recent years.

As you might have guessed, Jets HC Rex Ryan wasn’t too pleased that his best player was passed over for the award, and stated his case for Revis to the media:

Ryan makes some excellent points, but isn’t it just refreshing to have an NFL head coach who actually says what’s on his mind, and doesn’t turn every question into some coachspeak BS session?!? I mean, the guy clearly a clown, but it makes for some good entertainment!

Ochocinco Lost on Revis Island; Bengals Lose to Jets

Chad Ochocinco makes his 2nd catch in as many weeks against Darelle Revis (Photo: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Chad Ochocinco makes his 2nd catch in as many weeks against Darrelle Revis (Photo: Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Jets all-pro CB Darrelle Revis has once-and-for-all exposed Chad Ochocinco as the loud-mouthed fraud that his is. Today in Cincinnati, on his 32nd birthday, Ochocinco was held by Revis to just 2 catches for 28 yards in the Bengals 24-14 playoff loss to the New York Jets. Last week against the Jets, el Ocho was held to 0 catches for 0 yards.  Prior to that game, he had said he’d change his name back to Johnson if Revis shut him down, and then made excuses after the fact that he only played a half so it didn’t count. And today, Revis – who is clearly the best cover corner in the game – was back at it again:

Can we all officially agree that Ochocinco’s act has become tired? Every interview he talks about how he’s the greatest receiver in the game and how he can’t be covered. Yet when it matters most, he’s been decidedly mediocre. Let’s face it, Ochocinco has become a full-time Twitter celebrity and part-time football player. Every week he makes a new empty promise about planned TD celebrations and supposed name changes (Hachi Go, anyone?) … whatever it takes to get people talking about him. And then, after the fact, he pretends it never happened. I’m sure Chad is already preparing a big announcement that he’s challenging a kangaroo to a boxing match. His apologists will say that he’s just having fun, and granted, he’s not exactly hurting anyone. But after these last 2 games, all the crowing in the world can’t distract from the the fact that he’s just not that good anymore. And at some point, you need to be held accountable for the nonsense that comes out of your mouth.
