Last night, Super Bowl XLVII brought us one of the more surreal moments in sports history, as the power in the SuperDome went out during the 3rd quarter last night, leading to a 34-minute delay in play.
The outage came shortly after the Ravens took a commanding 28-6 lead, and the lengthy delay seemed to allow the 49ers to regroup and regain some momentum once the lights came back on. And even though Baltimore was able to hang on for the victory, the conspiracy theorists are already out in force suggesting some sort of foul play.
CBS’s 60 minutes crew was on hand and had their cameras rolling in the NFL’s control room as the lights went out, and captured this remarkable footage of the outage and its immediate aftermath:
VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP
During one remarkable stretch in the second quarter of Thursday’s 49-19 beatdown of the Jets, the Patriots reeled off 21 unanswered points in 52 seconds, punctuated by one remarkable play that encapsulates the entire Jets experience this season.
Watch as Mark Sanchez tries to hand the ball off to nobody, then elects to take off running before getting taken out by his own lineman’s rear end. As if that weren’t enough, the impact of Brandon Moore’s buttocks on Sanchez is so great that forces a fumble that gets returned 32-yards for a touchdown:
Ouch. After this most recent embarrassing display, even Fireman Ed is giving up his post as the Jets’ unofficial mascot. This might be a new low for Jets fans everywhere.
UPDATE AND BONUS SIMPSONS-THEMED GIF AFTER THE JUMP
With the Patriots in London this week for today’s game against the Rams - as part of Roger Goodell’s ongoing plan for global domination - demonstrative tight end Rob Gronkowski already became a hit with local fans when he spiked the microphone at a pre-game press conference.
And when Gronkowski scored a touchdown in the second quarter of the Patriots 45-7 rout of St. Louis at Wembley Stadium, he further endeared himself to the home crowd when he paid tribute to British culture by doing his own unique version of the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace … finished off by his patented Gronk spike, of course:
Video of the play HERE.
Gronkowski went on to have a monster day, finishing with 146 yards and 2 TDs … and after his second score, Gronk showed off his anglophile side once again as he munched on fish & chips and downed a pint in the back of the endzone.
No, not really.

And then there’s this remarkable Hochuli-Lewis mash up GIF, courtesy of @LSUFreek:
During tonight’s Ravens-Browns game, NFL Network treated us to some tremendous footage of Baltimore DT Haloti Ngata beasting on kids as a high school rugby player for Highland Rugby Club in Utah back in 2002.
We’ve known Ngata is an athletic freak for a while now, but the speed and quickness he displays for a man of his size is downright frightening. And we can only pity those poor suckers tasked with tackling Ngata – without pads, mind you – once he gets up a head of steam.

Broncos LB Joe Mays had his one-game suspension upheld yesterday for his brutal helmet-to-helmet hit on Texans’ QB Matt Schaub last Sunday.
The impact of the hit was so great that it sent Schaub’s helmet flying, along with a small piece of his ear lobe. And if you look closely enough in the banner pic above, you just might be able to make out that little ear chunk flying through the air. It was a gruesome sight to be sure, but Schaub toughed it out, missing only one play before returning to the field.
“I felt fine,” Schaub said. “I just lost a piece of my ear. I was bleeding and my helmet came off. So I had to come out for a play, but I was fine.”
Yikes.
As a repeat offender, Mays was also fined $50k for the hit, but he only appealed the suspension in hopes that he might be able to play in Sunday’s game against Oakland. Instead, the league has re-determined that Mays hit a defenseless Schaub in the head area with his own helmet after he had thrown the pass. Pretty obvious, really.
Mays has apologized to Schaub for the play, insisting he didn’t intend to hurt anyone, but will still have to sit this week out and think about what he’s done wrong.

This will be the image that encapsulates the replacement referees’ saga during the 2012 NFL season. And hopefully, it will be the moment that finally breaks the back on the league’s lockout of the regular refs:
You’ve all seen it by now (VIDEO HERE). The Seahawks beat the Packers on a last-second hail mary that was somehow ruled a touchdown by one official at the same time as the back judge ruled it an interception. A “Touchception”, if you will. And madness ensued.
The officials even went under the hood to review the play – although technically, posession is not reviewable – and came back with the same decision: Golden Tate had achieved simultaneous posession with M.D. Jennings, awarding the Seahawks a TD. This, despite seemingly obvious video evidence that clearly showed Jennings clutching the ball to his chest before Tate reached an arm in and wrestled the ball away in the pile.

If you’ve been listening to the debate over the replacement refs, and wondering exactly how they impact the game negatively or jeopardize player safety, I give you Exhibit B (Exhibit A HERE).
Oakland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey left today’s Raiders-Steelers game on a cart, after taking this brutal helmet-to-helmet hit in the endzone from CB Ryan Mundy:
Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious, and laid motionless on the field before being taken to a local hospital with a neck injury. No flags were thrown on the play.
