Tom Coughlin confronts Greg Schiano during post-game handshake (VIDEO & GIF)
By ArtieFufkin
Following the Giants 41-34 comeback win over the Buccanneers, we got ourselves a flashback to the Harbaugh-Schwartz kerfuffle from last season when Tom Coughlin confronted Bucs rookie head coach Greg Schiano during the post-game handshake.
Coughlin was upset that the Bucs defensive line shoved Eli Manning backward during the Giants kneel down attempt at the end of the game. At the snap, Tampa Bay defenders dove at the knees of the New York linemen in an attempt to disrupt the snap, some punches were thrown under the pile, and apparently, some of the Giants players indicated that the direction to dive at their knees had come from Schiano.
As Coughlin approached Schiano at midfield, he could clearly be seen saying “What the hell was that all about?”. Coughlin then spun to leave before turning around to shake Schiano’s hand and shouted “that’s f#@&ing bulls#!t”, to finish off Schiano’s “welcome to the NFL” moment.  Afterward, Coughlin said ”You can’t do that in this league … at this level”.
Here’s a GIF of the Giants victory formation play that sparked the confrontation:

In watching that, it certainly looks like a coordinated team effort to blow up the pile … not just a rogue player acting alone. Â For his part, Schiano appeared respectful in receiving his tongue lashing from the elder Coughlin, but didn’t apologize for his team’s actions, which only further reddened Coughlin’s face.
Hopefully this isn’t an indication of the way Schiano is teaching the Bucs to play, but after the game, Bucs DTÂ Gerald McCoy said, “We do what we’re coached. I’ll leave it at that.”
Hmmm …

UPDATE: After the game, Schiano continued to be unapologetic for his tactics:
“I don’t know if that’s not something that’s done in the National Football League,” Schiano said. “What I do with our football team is that we fight until they tell us game over. And there’s nothing dirty about it, there’s nothing illegal about it. We crowd the ball like a sneak defense and try to knock it loose. … If people watched Rutgers, they would know that’s what we do at the end of a game.”

Obviously they were trying for a forced fumble. Its called not giving up.
Victory formations are considered ceremonial at the NFL level, which is why you don’t see stuff like this happen very often, if at all. It’s the accepted etiquette that losing coaches concede the loss whenever the winning offense takes a knee (and choosing not to run up the score) to avoid any unnecessary injuries. It’s also called sportsmanship.
Diving at players knees when they’re not expecting it is a little more than “not giving up”. The Bucs had just given up 25 4th quarter points, blown a 14-point lead and thrown a game-losing interception, and were taking out their frustrations on the final play.
This isn’t Rutgers anymore, and Coughlin rightly called Schiano out for what is most definitely a bush league move. It’s legal, but it’s bush league.
I would like to see every team’s offense attempt to score on this defense until the last play, all year long. At the end of these games after getting scored on by the winning team, I hop every sideline reporter asks this coach about “Rutgers football”
