Live Game Blog: Giants vs Jets (pre-season)

Eli Manning is a bloody mess. Not what Giants fans wanted to see tonight (Photo: Tim Farrell, US Presswire via ESPN.com)
UPDATE: Eli Manning left the game in the 2nd quarter with a 3-inch laceration on his forehead, requiring 12 stitches.
Watch Eli get bloodied on NFL.com
With the Giants driving and inside the 15, Manning dropped back to pass and ran into Brandon Jacobs, knocking the ball out of his hands. When Manning grabbed for the ball, LB Calvin Pace drilled him from behind, knocking Eli’s helmet flying through the air. As he went down, sans helmet, Manning fell forward into S Jim Leonard, cutting his head on Leonard’s facemask. Eli walked to the sidelines and was replaced by backup QB Jim Sorgi.
From TheBlueScreen:
The Giants have sent Eli Manning home after he got 12 stitches in his forehead. The team says X-Rays were negative and there were no signs of a concussion.
“I feel fine,” Manning said. “I feel normal. … I’ll be back as soon as I can. It’s really not an injur. Nothing serious. I really feel like I could go back out and play right now if I had to.

UPDATE #2: It’s the Victor Cruz show for the Giants in the 2nd half! Cruz, a rookie WR from Massachussets, has 6 catches for 145 yards and 3 TDs in the 2nd half. The highlight of the night was undoubtedly this one-handed circus catch Cruz takes 64 yards for the score:

The NFL is officially back after the first full week of pre-season games, culminating in tonight’s Monday Night Football match-up between the Giants and Jets. And we. are. fired. UP!!!
The New York Jets are the current darlings of the media after their AFC Championship appearance last season, and adding players like LaDanian Tomlinson, Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes. Meanwhile, the Giants – who have long held claim to the football throne in New York – have added lots of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and will look to rebound from a horrible finish to the 2009 campaign. Both teams will be looking to plant their flag in the New Meadowlands Stadium with a win tonight.
We’ll be following all the action and posting our running thoughts in the comments section … join us, won’t you?

Inactives for the Giants:
guards Chris Snee (knee) and Rich Seubert (hand), wide receiver Steve Smith (groin), cornerback Corey Webster (glute), safeties Kenny Phillips (knee) and Michael Johnson (back), linebacker Keith Bulluck (knee), and tight end Kevin Boss
Inactives for the Jets:
Darrelle Revis and …. who the hell cares?
Frank Gifford celebrating his 80th birthday tonight … out on the town with Kathie Lee, but looking pretty Al Davis-eque these days
Ahmad Bradshaw runs into his own lineman on 1st down and is tackled for a loss
The Giants injuries allow 2nd year WR Ramses Barden to start … and he drops the slant pass on his first attempt.
Manningham slips on 3rd down and its a quick 3 and out for the Giants.
BTW, this play-by-play is probably only going to last through the first half.
Since there’s so many of you out there reading along, I mean
Shonn Greene stopped for no gain on 1st down
INTERCEPTION on the tipped ball by Antrelle Rolle, who takes it back to the 1 yard line!!!
Sanchez forced the attempt into Tomlinson, off his shoulder pad, and Rolle – the new FA pickup from Arizona – took it and ran
Watch it here:

Jacobs gets 2 tries from 1 yard out … and can’t get into the endzone. Not great
3rd and goal – Jacobs finally gets in
7-0 Giants
The New Meadowlands Stadium passes the eye test on TV, anyway
Jets ball – Tomlinson no gain on a run
Jaws is showing how Sanchez throws picks when he throws to his left
flare pass to TE Dustin Keller for an 8 yard gain, 3rd and 2
Green gets the first down and more. Green is a tough runner, and you get the feeling that the combo of Green and Tomlinson could be dangerous if nobody gets hurt.
Jets move the sticks again on an out pattern to Cotchery. 1st & 10 at the Giants 38
Sanchez check down to Green for a gain of 5, then Green carries up the middle for another first down.
The drive stalls on 3rd down, but the Jets get another first down on the illegal use of hands penalty on Chris Canty
Giants DL looks to be having trouble against the run on this drive.
Obviously in pre-season Gm 1, the defensive fronts will be vanilla, and these players are adjusting the the defense of new DC Perry Fewell
Jets pushed back by an offsides penalty, and on 3rd down Sanchez hits to Tomlinson for the first down. I saw that play on Hard Knocks.
Jets have almost 8:00 time of possession on this drive alone
TOUCHDOWN Jets!
Sanchez hits a wide open Brad Smith on an awful miscommunication by the Giants defense left him all alone (and the Giants had 12 men on the field). Clearly, a timeout was needed there.
7-7
Giants go 3 and out, as Manning throws off his back foot (yet again) in the face of a coming blitz, and is lucky it didn’t get picked off.
the punt is BLOCKED!
The Giants new punter, rookie Matt Dodge, gets his first NFL punt blocked. He replaced Jeff Feagles, who may have had 2 or 3 punts blocked in his whole careeer. Which was like 20 years
Tomlinson scores on a 15-yard run, but it comes back on a holding call
Sanchez completes one to Braylon Edwards, but then misses on 3rd down just past the outstretched arm of Edwards in the endzone
Nick Folk – the Jets new kicker – converts the FG
10-7 Jets
The Giants defense is already improved with Antrelle Rolle and Deon Grant at Safety. And guys like Kenny Phillips, Corey Webster and Keith Bulluck are out. This bodes well.
Fireman Ed is still a total nutjob
Manning completes an out pattern to Barden as the 1st quarter comes to an end
The Giants offense needs to show a little something on this drive. So far they barely have positive total yardage, with the INT setting up their only score.
Manning almost gets picked off by Cromartie, who jumped in front of Manningham on the crossing route
on 3rd and 4, Manning completes to Nicks against Cromartie for the first down
Jacobs finally finds some room to run, but its called back for holding
Manning with the improvised shovel pass under pressure to Bradshaw who breaks it for a HUGE gain
Watch it here:

1st and 10 at the Jets 14 yard line
Manning gets KILLED from behind by Pace and loses his helmet after running into Jacobs
lots of blood coming from forehead as he goes to the sideline
Eli heads to the locker room for stitches as Tynes knicks in the FG
Looks like it’s just a cut … scars are cool, and hopefully it’ll toughen the kid up a little.
10-10
1st round pick DE Jason Pierre-Paul is seeing his first action for the Giants.
Sanchez with a long completion to Edwards, into Giants territory. JPP gets knocked to the ground on the play.
Another completion to Edwards … who actually makes a nice catch on the play. Good thing none of these catches mean anything.
First down on the completion to Cotchery at the 13
2nd team Giants defense vs the 1st team Jets offense here
Tons of praise for Sanchez here, but the drive stalls and the Jets kick another FG.
That should do it for the Jets starters too
13-10 Jets
Jim Sorgi – the new Giants backup QB – comes in for the other Manning brother after backing up Peyton for years in Indy
Rex is showing all sorts of fancy blitzes here in the pre-season.
There’s no doubt which coach is more concerned with coming away with a W
another 3 and out for the Giants, as we hit the 2 minute warning.
Sanchez gets sacked by Pierre-Paul, and then Rookie LB Philip Dillard makes a tackle at the line of scrimage.
3rd & 17, complete to Edwards for the first down, but he stepped out of bounds before the catch and it comes back.
Eli has a 3-inch laceration on his forehead. Ouch.
Jets ring of Honor ceremony, and Frank Gifford interview coming up at halftime
I assume Namath won’t be anywhere near Suzy Kolber tonight.
Sorgi looks pretty lost out there trying to run the 2 minute drill, and we go into the half with the Jets leading 13-10
At least its been a decent game so far, but it’s going to get a little dicey in the second half, as the coaches try to get a look at the third and fourth stringers.
We’ll hang as long as we can … your comments keep us going!
We’re 8 minutes into halftime … Rex has already racked up $42 in snack fines in the locker room
How is this ring of honor going to work in the new stadium? Are they going to take it down every Giants game? I would’ve thought they could’ve done it digitally or something in the new place. Instead they just run tons of HESS ads constantly there
The new PA gets a big FAIL for this ceremony … can’t hear a thing Namath is saying because of the echo. Oh, they fixed it for the last 10 seconds of his speech. Nice.
Kolber interviewing Rex Ryan, and Ryan just tried to kiss her. He really is a fan of Jets tradition
kidding
2nd half is underway … enjoy folks, I’m going to check out of the live game blog.
unless something super-awesome happens, that is.
Giants rookie WR Victor Cruz is making his case to make the team with 2 second-half TDs on 3 catches for 119 yards
His 1st TD was an unbelievable one handed catch on a Sorgi pass that he took 64-yards for a score.
Watch it here:

Sinorice Moss is on notice
Giants 24, Jets 16
I’m still not comfortable with them referring to anyone else as “LT” in the Meadowlands.
But I guess Lawrence sacrificed his stronghold on that nickname, what with the whole underage prostitute thing and all.
Great stuff Fufkin…Go Gmen! That hit on Eli was brutal looking. Interested to find out if he’s okay, besides the stitches. Which you’re right, are cool, and my toughen up the Super Bowl MVP.
Later,
Dan
Victor Cruz gets his THIRD TD of the night! Holy CRAP!
I think it’s safe to say he’s secured a roster spot with some NFL team tonight, and if there’s a god above, he’ll take Sinorice Moss’ spot with the Giants.
Giants 31, Jets 16
Yeah, it’s still Giants stadium
DOOKIE – good to hear from you! And glad to know I wasn’t all by myself in here tonight.
G-MEN!!!
Quote from Eli:
“I feel fine,” Manning said. “I feel normal. … I’ll be back as soon as I can. It’s really not an injur. Nothing serious. I really feel like I could go back out and play right now if I had to.”
