THE 2010 NFL DRAFT 2ND-ROUND LIVE BLOG
By TheDarkHorse
Round Two is just hours away, and we’re already hearing buzz about heavy trading activity at the top of the round. As always, the QB-focused media is asking where Clausen and Colt will end up–but there’s talent all over the place, and Rounds 2 and 3 are where teams are built.
To help you get up to speed for day 2, Gil Brandt at NFL.com has his list of the Top 100 players available: guys like Clausen, Sergio Kindle, and Taylor Mays are certainly going to be hot properties this evening. At this hour, both Cleveland and Buffalo are negotiating with St. Louis for the 33rd pick in this year’s draft–which guy are they after?
As always, we’re following the action right here. Artie and TheDarkHorse will be filing commentary, breaking news, and analysis from around the league.

The Washington Post has the back story on Goodell calling Trent Williams “Silverback” when he announced his name yesterday. It was a joke between the two:
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Raiders trade Kirk Morrison today, now that they have McLain in the fold … he would be a good fit for the Giants.
Are the Raiders gonna’ steal your entire draft?
Rams GM says it’s unlikely that they’ll keep pick #33 …
Who are they shipping it to?
Alright, here we go … looks like the Rams are using the pick!
Goodell is announcing round 2 picks as well?
The Rams take OT Roger Saffold to go with Bradford.
I’m watching today on the NFL network … I suffered enough through ESPN yesterday.
I’m really excited for tonight. While the first round gets all the hype, I’ve always believed rounds 2-4 are where your draft is made
Vikings on the clock … do they go QB here?
34) Vikings – Chris Cook, CB Virginia
35) Bucs – Brian Price, DT UCLA
So far, no trades, despite all the chatter and expectations.
Bucs get another DT to go with Gerald McCoy …
36) Chiefs – Dexter McCluster, RB Mississippi
Eagles on the clock. Could be Taylor Mays here, or another CB
37) Eagles – Nate Allen, S S. Florida
That was the pick the Eagles got for McNabb. Kind of Amazed that Taylor Mays is still on the board.
AND THE BROWNS ARE ON THE CLOCK!
LaCanforna says they’re not taking a QB
Jim Brown is making the pick for Cleveland … apparently the top 20 draft picks (as voted on NFL.com) are delivering picks today.
LaCanforna says its – TJ Ward, S
38) Browns – TJ Ward, S Oregon
Mayock had hm rated as a 2nd rounder based on game tape, but he’s got a lengthy injury history which moved him lower on his board.
And we have our first trade!
The Bucs trade up 3 spots with the Raiders (giving up a 5th round pick) for …
39) Bucs – Arrelious Benn, WR Illinois
Dan Marino – who clearly has been hitting the tanning salon – announces the Dolphins pick
40) Dolphins – Koa Misi, OLB Utah
this means nothing to me
41) Bills – Torell Troup, DT UCF
Raiders trade their pick to New England … it’s chaos at radio city. The Ravens are up next
42) Patriots – Rob Gronkowski, TE Arizona
Ray Lewis delivers the ravens pick.
43) Ravens – Sergio Kindle, LB Texas
this is a steal for the Ravens
Raiders on the clock … again.
The Giants are 2 picks away … I’m hoping for either Sean Lee or Daryl Washington at LB.
44) Raiders – Lamarr Houston, DT Texas
Back to back Longhorn defenders off the board, as the Raiders finally make a pick!
Broncos on the clock
45) Broncos – Zane Beadles, OT Utah
Announced by Floyd Little
LET’S GO GIANTS!!!
46) Giants – Linval Joseph, DT ECU
The last DT the Giants took named Joseph (William) didn’t work out so hot. I’m not sure why they passed on a LB with Lee and Washington on the board, but what do I know.
I can’t even find highlights of this guy.
And the Cardinals trade up to take Daryl Washington. Perfect.
And the Panthers take Jimmy Clausen at #48!!!
Linval Joseph Highlights (minus audio)
Apparently, despite what Mayock says, Joseph projects as a 1-technique DT, which is what the Giants need.
Gil Brandt has Joseph ranked in tier 4 of his Hot 100 (projected to go somewhere in picks 31-40), and had this to say of him:
Has really come on as the draft approaches. Has strength, size, speed and power. His best days are ahead.
Seems like a big strong body who will occupy blockers and plug the middle of the field. Can’t argue with the pick … the Giants DTs weren’t very good last year. Now we just need to get Brandon Spikes in round 3
49) 49ers – Taylor Mays, S USC
I’m liking SF’s draft with Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati and Mays so far
50) Chiefs – Javier Arenas, CB Alabama
51) Vikings – Toby Gerhart, RB Stanford (traded up with HOU to get the pick)
Gerhart could be a nice compliment to AP.
Gerhart highlights … which doesn’t have a hip-hop soundtrack for once!
And here’s the “Hello, Good Morning” Verizon commercial that I’ll have stuck in my head for the next week:
52) Steelers – Jason Worilds, DA Va Tech
53) Patriots – Jermaine Cunningham, DE Florida
Apparently the Patriots tweeted their pick before it was announced. We’re in a new age, folks!
54) Bengals – Carlos Dunlap, DE Florida
55) Cowboys – Sean Lee, LB Penn State
Great pick for the Cowboys. Dallas traded up yet again for their pick … Jerrah was going nuts in the war room.
Old Man RiverGil Brandt made the announcement56) Packers – Mike Neal, DT Purdue
57) Ravens – Terrence Cody, DT Alabama
Wow, the Ravens get Cody to go alongside Ngata … Ray Lewis is going to go untouched. Plus they also got Kindle to go opposite of Suggs.
There has been a MAJOR run on DTs in the 2nd round:
3 (35) Buccaneers – Price, Brian
9 (41) Bills – Troup, Torell
12 (44) Raiders – Houston, Lamarr
14 (46) Giants – Joseph, Linval
24 (56) Packers – Neal, Mike
25 (57) Ravens – Cody, Terrence
It’s definitely a premium position, especially as more teams switch to 3-4 defenses.
58) Texans – Ben Tate, RB Auburn
And then the Browns trade up with the Eagles to take Montario Hardesty, RB Tennessee at #59
60) Seattle Seahawks – Golden Tate, WR Notre Dame
61) Jets – Vlad Ducasse, OT, Massachussets
62) Patriots – Brandon Spikes, LB Florida
63) Cots – Pat Angerer, LB Iowa
And now there’s a run on Linebackers at the end of the round. I really like both Spikes and Angerer.
And with the final pick of round 2, the New Orleans Saints select Charles Brown, OT USC.
Both Brown and Ducasse to the Jets are great OL pick-ups at the end of the 2nd.
We’re starting a new thread for the 3rd round … join us there if you just can’t get enough.
