Jets fan arrested for chanting “JETS JETS JETS”
By ArtieFufkin
By now you may have seen this video from Sunday’s Chargers/Jets playoff game in San Diego, in which a Jets fan is taken down by police and arrested, seemingly just for cheering on his favorite team:
Now, we don’t get to see exactly what happens right before the cops get there, but it doesn’t seem like he did anything to warrant getting tackled like that. Hell, even the Chargers fans sitting in the area are defending the guy!
I was waiting for some more of the actual story to come out before posting this clip, and in today’s NY Post, the Jets fan in the video, Bill Carroll, finally speaks up.
Apparently an off-duty police officer sitting near Carroll sent a text message to police reporting a drunk causing a disturbance:
Carroll — who had been shouting “J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!” near the off-duty officer — told The Post yesterday, “I wasn’t doing anything wrong. I was just watching the game.
“What’s wrong with me saying, ‘Jets, Jets, Jets?’ “
He said he had just three beers over four hours and cops refused to let him take a Breathalyzer test to prove he was sober.
The officers “were just totally out of line, and they wouldn’t listen to reason,” said Steve Sevigny, a Charger fan who witnessed the arrest.
“The poor guy was just totally busted for nothing.”
A previous report from the guy who posted the video suggested that a female Chargers fan in a wheelchair had actually slapped Carroll in the face and told him to shut up, which prompted police to respond. And apparently the SDPD policy is to cuff ‘em first, ask questions later.
