John Riggins Rips into Redskins, calls Jim Zorn a high school coach

By ArtieFufkin

John Riggins is hoping to instill some of that fire that brought Washington their last Super Bowl. 27 years ago.

John Riggins is hoping to instill some of that fire that brought Washington their last Super Bowl. 18 years ago.

Things aren’t going so great in Washington these days with the 2-3 Redskins.  After another loss to a previously a winless team (the Panthers), the calls for head coach Jim Zorn to be replaced have started growing louder & louder around the Beltway.

You can add Hall of Fame Redskins RB John Riggins to the list of critics who are none-too-pleased with the state of the franchise.  Riggo just posted this video to his Twitter account – apparently fresh from chopping wood – in which he pulls no punches in calling out GM Vinny Cerrato and Zorn as the main problems with the ‘Skins.  In fact, he goes so far as to suggest that Zorn would be a better fit coaching at the high school level:

“Jim, you are not a head football coach in the NFL.  High school? Definitely. You can coach my son in high school any time. Ankle biters for sure.

[...]

You’re out of your league Jim.  No offense to you, but I don’t think you’re gonna grow into this job.  I just don’t think that you’re cut from that right bolt of cloth … But I wish you luck, and you are gone.”

Ouch.  Check out the entire rant below, and prepare for the groundswell of support among DC-area sports radio callers around a “Riggins for Head Coach” campaign.

I couldnt agree more. Cerrato is the route of all problems. The offensive line was not the top priority it should have been. The wide receivers drafted cant get open let alone catch. Why the hell did we waste a #2 draft choice on a tight end we dont need! Why did we let Williams go and hire Zorn, a quarterback coach. CERRATO SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problems with the Redskins has never really been the coaches BUT the owner of the Redskins, Dan Snyder. Why doesn’t he keep his big nose out of the Redskins since he knows absolutely nothing about pro football or how to draft able players who can do the job properly.

Uh, the Redskins haven’t won a Super Bowl in 27 years (1982?) Pssst! They’ve won TWO since then (vs. the Broncos and Bills). Sorry, I thought this was a FOOTBALL site. I guess I’ll go somewhere else for actual facts and information.

I believe the correct quote is “I don’t think you’re cut from that right bolt of cloth.”
I’m not sure what a “mold of cloth” is.

Jerry – good catch. 27 years, 18 years … what’s the difference, right? Point is, they haven’t come close to doing anything in the Snyder era, and even Skins fans are finally starting to realize that he’s the root of the problem. And in my defense, I was hammered drunk at the time I wrote that article. Cut me some slack ;)

Scott – thanks for pointing that out. I had no idea what “mold of cloth” meant either … I just figured Riggo was mixing his metaphors.

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Riggo
Great Post — the truth that nobody has the nerve to publicly state like this — It seems to me that some of the decisions in the last few years are about what they (Snyder and Cerrato) look like vs whats good for the team — they keep bad draft picks on the team to avoid the negative of making a bad selection — If the player drafted is a bust then cut the teams loss and own up to it and release him — it did not make any sense to me that they focused on the 4th ranked defense to bolster (in the draft) and not the offense that was ranked near the bottom of the league — I agree with Sonny to the end that Campbell is not a 3 step drop, west coast offense, quarterback — its not really his fault — trade him to a team that runs a traditional offense where he can be a good back-up — I have been a season ticket holder since 1956 and have been thru all of the Bill McPeake type seasons — long time fans that have HAD ENOUGH need to unite and YOU NEED TO ORGANIZE AND LEAD US JOHN RIGGINS !! — Larry Michael gets his paycheck from the redskins so how much can he really say ?? — fanexodus is a start but I do not think we have a strong enough arm — WE NEED YOU RIGGO the same now as we did when you played — OH and PS — I used to watch you sneak off the field early (to the locker room) before the game was over — cold beer waiting !!!! — that was funny

Way to go Riggo! U’ve always been my favorite Redskin…I’m a Cowboys fan being a native Texan. I can definately feel for u since our biggest thorn in the side is Jerry Jones…we look for the day he’ll leave or turn things over to his sons. I hope u get back on the air even if u have to go to another station cause I always enjoyed ur candor. Wish I knew ur website add so I could keep up better with what’s going on with u. Best of everything to u John, jcm969
