Week 1 NFL Live Blog: Late Games

By ArtieFufkin

A classic NFC East rivalry reunites at the Meadowlands

A classic NFC East rivalry resumes this afternoon at the Meadowlands

The early round of games are just finishing up, where we saw Adrian Peterson run wild for 180 yards and 3 TDs, Drew Brees throw for 6 TDs, Donovan McNabb leaving the game with broken ribs, and an absolutely CRAZY finish in Cincinatti, with the Broncos beating the Bengals on a last second 87-yd tipped-ball TD by Brandon Stokley.

There are only 3 late games this afternoon, with the Giants/Redskins the clear marquee match-up.  Let’s face it, the 2 lame NFC West showdowns – Cardinals/49ers and Seahawks/Rams - are background noise to this old-school rivalry.  Everyone wonders if the Giants can replace Plaxico Burress, and the Redskins hope Albert Haynesworth can help them slow down the NY running game.

We’ll continue to follow the action, and post our wildly insightful/humorous thoughts in the comments.

Great. Injury on the opening kickoff. 3rd string RB Danny Ware. Supposed to help fill the void for Derrick Ward. Dislocated elbow.

Mario Manningham was the most targeted WR in the pre-season for the Giants. I feel pretty good about the mix of Hixon, Smith, Manningham and Nicks. One of these guys is going to step up. Eli looking sharp early.

Great audible at the line by Eli for the quick WR screen on that play. He seems to have a good rapport Manningham, who made a couple guys miss and was gone. 30-yd TD. 3 catches for 58 yards to far.

    10-0 Giants

Eli sacked and fumbles the ball … Jacobs missed his blocking assignment badly, and the Redskins defender went untouched. The Giants are dominating this game, but keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Fake FG by the Redskins for a TD. The holder/punter, Hunter Smith runs it in around the end.

    17-7 Giants

Here’s something that has always bothered me about Troy Aikman. He inserts the word “what” into sentences unnecessarily.

    Example:
“The blitz forced Campbell get rid of the ball sooner than what he would have liked”

“Ahmad Bradshaw is a quicker back than what the defense is used to”

“If you’re gonna run the ball as effectively as what the Giants have …”

    Listen for it. It’s maddening.

There’s a guy with a noisemaker near Fox’s crowd mic who sounds like he’s blowing into some sort of horn/tube to make a low, bellowing sort of sound. With the surround sound, and the bass vibration from the speaker is kind of adding a rumbling effect, I keep looking around to figure out where this noise is coming from. Prrrrrrr. PPPPRRRRRRRR. over and over again.

I keep thinking my phone is vibrating somewhere in the room. Either that, or after the way I’ve been eating today, it might be my stomach.

Manning picked off by DeAngelo Hall on a tipped ball. The Redskins take over at the NY 12. The Giants D is playing great football today. They need to come up with another stop here.

Giants offense can’t seem to put together a complete drive. Jacobs misses another pass blocking assignment. Rookie WR Hakeem Nicks leaves the game with what looks to be a foot injury. Tynes hits a 45-yd FG.

    20-10 Giants

Elsewhere, the Seahawks are killing the Rams 28-0, and the Cards/49ers are tied 13-13 at the end of the 3rd. We’ll keep an eye of that one.

The Giants are on the move. Eli has had a few nice completions to Smith and Boss. At the Washington 14. Let’s see if they can finish it off.

    And … they can’t. Tynes 28-yd FG.

    23-10 Giants.

Campbell catchet fire in the no-huddle with less than 2 minutes to go. TD pass to Cooley.

    23-14 Giants.

Here comes the onside kick … Giants recover, and that’s how it will end. Solid win for the G-men.

Fox graces us with “bonus coverage” of the Cardinals/49ers, with 7 minutes remaining in the 4th. On the first play we get to see, Shaun Hill hits Frank Gore in the flats for a TD.

    20-16 49ers.

I just love the way Singletary coaches. Going down the bench talking to each of his players, getting them fired up. Did you hear he named Vernon Davis a team captain? Quite a turnaround from getting chewed out and kicked off the field last season.

Packers/Bears on Sunday Night Football. 3-2 Packers, top of the 4th.

I can’t watch Collinsworth now without thinking of that creepy clip. WithLeather.com compared him to Wooderson from Dazed and Confused:

Cutler stinking it up in the 1st half. 8/22, 3 INTs. 10-2 Packers.

By the way, what happened to Tiki Barber’s run as NBC’s golden boy? Has anyone heard from him lately?
