Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount punches Boise State DE Byron Hout
By TheDarkHorse
The story of the day seems to be the outburst of Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount‘s sucker-punch of Boise State DE Byron Hout, who was openly taunting him. Oregon fell to Boise State 19-8 last night, in a nationally televised game.
Oregon has just suspended Blount for the season. Hout was not disciplined by Boise State.
Blount made this apology: “It was just something that I shouldn’t have done. I lost my head.”
Oregon University president Richard Lariviere made this statement: “We do not and will not tolerate the actions that were taken by our player. Oregon’s loyal fans expect and deserve better. The University of Oregon Athletics Department is reviewing the situation and will take appropriate action, reflecting the seriousness of the player’s behavior.”
Here’s what happened:

Ridiculous. But while everyone is going crazy on Blount (and rightfully so), I think it’s fair to point out that Hout clearly initiated the confrontation when he smacked Blount’s pads and said something about an “ass whoopin”. In fact, Hout was getting chewed out by his head coach for being a jackass at the moment he got clocked.
I’m not defending Blount’s behavior … you don’t punch a guy when he isn’t looking, no matter what. Not on a football field, not while wearing a helmet, not ever.
But there’s a part of me that enjoyed watching Hout having that smug smirk wiped off his face. Just a small part
Agreed. Isn’t Hout at least half the problem here?
He instigated this fight. Yeah, Blount shouldn’t have thrown the punch, but people seem to be glossing over Haut in this one.
I guess Blount had talked a significant amount of trash before the game, saying that Oregon was going to hand Boise State a beat down. So, Hout probably seeked him out to say something to the effect of “how’d that beat down work out for you”, which set Blount off.
All I know is I’m having fun watching Lou Holtz say “Boisshhee Sshhtate” as they discuss this fight on ESPN. That set must be drenched in Holtz saliva.
looks to me like that white carnehead got what he was asking for. i think they should have given that guy who threw the punch a nice box of chocolates.
Hout is half of the problem, but nothing will happen to him. I do believe Blount deserved a partial suspension rather than an entire season; however, it’s coming out from ESPN that this young man had previous run-ins with the current coaching staff and athletic department earlier this year. Apparently, this might have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Taunting is par for the course for someone who predicts an “ass whooping.”
Actions have to back up the feeble words. I know it was frustrating for Oregon and their coach, someone I played against.
Yeah, the DE should not have been unsportsmanlike, but Blount needs to be arrested for assault.
Picking a fight with a guy when his helmet is off and yours is on?
This is going to teach players to keep their cans on.
